Sharlene Goff of the Financial Times writes an article on dividends that points out the difficulty investors in the UK have in finding reliable income on the heals of Marks and Spencer's recent dividend cut.
"The main factors behind the cuts are falling profitability due to the economic downturn and a drive by companies to preserve capital. Many companies are desperately trying to clear debt off their balance sheets and so cannot afford to give payouts to investors. Income-seeking investors still have a few options, however. Advisers recommend sectors including pharmaceuticals, utilities, oil and tobacco. Large international companies such as Vodafone and Tesco could also still provide reliable income streams."
